Diabetes Treatment and Prevention Q & A

What causes diabetes?

Diabetes occurs when the body does not process blood sugar appropriately. Your body requires glucose, or blood sugar, to use as fuel to power the cells in muscles and tissues. However, glucose is meant to enter the cells so that they can receive the energy. When glucose does not enter the cells and stays in the bloodstream, blood sugar becomes too high, causing diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes, known as juvenile diabetes, is typically diagnosed in adolescence or young adulthood. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed across the lifespan and is caused by a combination of risk factors. Pre-diabetes is a potentially reversible type that happens when blood sugar is high but not high enough to meet the criteria for Type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed in pregnant women.

Are there any symptoms associated with diabetes?

Most people do not experience any symptoms at first, especially those with Type 2 or pre-diabetes. Those with Type 1 experience severe symptoms that occur suddenly. Symptoms may include blurred vision, extreme hunger, frequent urination, increased thirst, frequent infections, slow-healing sores, and unexplained weight loss.

If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms or are at risk of diabetes, see a doctor as soon as possible for screening.
